Copal Amber

Copal Amber

SKU: AMB01
£32.00Price

This VERY RARE broad stick of copal amber displays a multitude of small bugs and winged insects within. There is at least one spider. The copal is like a stick of sunshine and has excellent clarity and several bubbly air pockets giving the resin the appearance of being in motion. The copal is a beautiful rich honey colour, silky in parts, textured in others. It either lies down flat or sits up on one edge which has a broad base. A unique and very collectible specimen.

8 x 3cm

This Copal is a semi fossilised resin originating from the leguminous trees Hymenaea Verrucosa, that grow in the lowland coastal forests of Madagascar. Copal is much younger than amber. There is no firm evidence of the age of this copal, but studies tell us that they could be as young as 300 years, or up to thousands of years old.

I have been incredibly fortunate to obtain this copal amber. These are RARE and are no longer allowed out of the country apparently. They are old stock that have just been released. The copal is like a stick of sunshine with excellent clarity, and the bulk of them contain multiple bugs, creepy crawlies and winged insects. Some of them look as if the resin is still in motion and there are many air pockets on show. It is rare to see the copal so clear, as it often gets infected with a fungi and turns milky.
